History

St. George Utah was founded in 1861 as a cotton mission under the direction of Brigham Young who was at that time the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. At the outbreak of the American Civil War Brigham Young organized the settlement of what is now called Washington County. The city of St. George is 300 miles south of Salt Lake City Utah and 120 miles Northeast of Las Vegas Nevada.

From 1990 – 2007 St. George became one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas within the United States. Commonly known as Utah’s Dixie, a nickname given to the area when Mormon pioneers grew their cotton in the heat, the region has been a location in which many people have moved to retire and/or raise families. With its location being close to Zion’s National Park, Pine Valley and other recreational areas the region has many tourist attractions.

With its red rocks, blue skies and warm summers with mostly snowless winters the area has become popular with those who like fun in the sun. The 2010 U.S. Census reported St. George Utah had a population of 72,897 and Washington County with a population of 137,473.
